About the area

Rose Cottage is situated in the village of Keld in Upper Swaledale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is an area of outstanding beauty known for its hardy Swaledale sheep, flower rich hay meadows which burst into colour in June and dry stone walls and buildings.

In the village The Keld Resource and Heritage Centre tells the story of Upper Swaledale life. Housed in the newly-restored former Keld School, find out about the farmers and leadminers of the dale, how they worked, lived, played and prayed.

The area is a walker’s paradise with many walks accessible at Keld including the Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast made famous by Arthur Wainwright. There are countless walks passing beautiful waterfalls, old lead mines and wild moorland. This is also a great area for cycling, flat (relatively!) or more challenging roads such as the Buttertubs Pass which was featured in last years Tour de France Grand Depart.

There are many places to visit with the villages of Muker and Reeth providing individual craftshops, tea rooms and the Swaledale Woollen shop. Hawes and Leyburn in Wensleydale provide many individual shops, weekly markets and at Hawes the well known Wensleydale Creamery. Richmond, at the gateway to Swaledale, has an impressive castle, several good eating places and a swimming pool.
